Using lens and pens, Shirley documents her travels and life around her. Everything from ordinary, daily details to “right place, right time” sublime moments are noticed and become fodder for pondering. Her photography and writing have become intimately intertwined through her creative work. As a retired Christian Education Coordinator, she published a book of devotions, edited a book documenting the restoration of her church’s stained glass windows, and began writing poetry. Her favorite activities include spending time with family and friends, travel, and reading.
Following the Bread Crumbs
Following the Bread Crumbs is a compilation of meditations written over three summers. I shared my photos and these brief devotions with my congregation every week as spiritual nurture during our summer break from Sunday school. Each Sunday morning, I arranged a new collection of images and a one page written meditation with scripture in the chapel. It was available for anyone to use during the following week. By the end of the third summer, people began telling me, "You should do something with these." This book was the result of that encouragement to “do something” with my work.
Stories in Stained Glass: A Labor of Love
Two members of Christ United Church of Christ in Orrville, Ohio, joined forces using their individual talents to refurbish many of the stained glass windows in the century-old sanctuary. I edited this book using information from the Burkey family, church newsletters and worship bulletins, artist renderings, and my own photos to document and preserve the story for the family, the congregation and community history.
