Clay Cormany is not a young adult, but he enjoys writing YA novels. Besides The Secrets We Keep: Journal of a Girl in Trouble, he is the author of Fast-Pitch Love, which combines the angst of teenage romance with softball competition, and The Bullybuster, which also involves a teenage romance as well as robots and revenge.
Before completing his novels, Clay spent 28 years as a writer and editor for Ohio’s State Board of Education. His creative work appeared in the Columbus Dispatch and Spring Street, Columbus State Community College’s literary magazine. He also edited numerous books, including A Death Prolonged by Dr. Jeff Gordon, which received coverage in The New York Times and on PBS.
Clay is a strong supporter of arts-related programs, both inside and outside his home community of Worthington. When he is not writing, he enjoys reading, bicycling, and – when he has enough energy – spending time with his grandchildren.

It has to be a joke. That’s what Collin Morris thinks when a brown felt-covered diary falls out of his backpack along with his textbooks one evening. But after reading only half the diary, Collin realizes it is no joke. It’s the narrative of a female classmate desperately seeking to escape an abusive boyfriend who holds some grip on her because she “cheated.” But who is the “girl in trouble” who wrote the journal? How did it get into his backpack? And who is the abusive boyfriend the girl refers to only as “Red Lion?” With help from his brainy, allergy-afflicted friend Herbie Kessler, Collin sets off to answer these questions and rescue the girl. In the end, however, Collin may be the one who needs to be rescued.

By volunteering to be a coach, too, he can make his move after Carson leaves for an out-of-town job. Unfortunately, “S. J. Thornapple” turns out to be Stephanie's sister, Sylvia. But… Sylvia can't stand Carson and helps Jace hook up with Stephanie. On their dates, Jace is swept away by Stephanie's beauty, but at the same time, his relationship with Sylvia develops as the two of them deal with discouraged players, surly opponents, and overbearing parents. Before long, Jace becomes torn between the two sisters, and when Carson discovers he's been dating Stephanie, he can't back down either from his adversary or from the choice he must make between the siblings.
